MEET JOAKIM FIHN, THE DESIGNER BEHIND OUR NOMINATED PORTO
A WELL-FOUNDED PLAN AND GREAT TEAMWORK
In the recent years, Belid Lighting Group has invested in our growing business area Professional, where i.a. development of multifunctional lighting and sustainable material choices will broaden our product range for the public environment.
The ideas for a cork serie emerged through an internal workshop where the business area team wanted to develop new innovative products by adding new, sustainable materials and more technical innovations. It was at this time, that the first sketches of what would later become our nominated cork serie, were made.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF DESIGNING A CORK SERIE?
It was when we evaluated different materials that we discovered what an incredible material cork is. Natural cork has so many positive properties. Natural cork, is for example light, elastic and acoustically insulating. Natural cork has aslo slow combustion and is very resistant to friction. In addition, natural cork is allergy friendly and fire-retardant. Cork is a natural raw material, recyclable and sustainable. It is a 100% natural plant-based tissue. Cork products can also be recycled for other alternative cork applications. So, nothing is wasted.
The cork we intend to use in Porto is made of blocks of natural cork. These blocks are made of layers of cork tape and not barley. This cork is a low processed cork. Most of its original properties are preserved and there is a minimal level of transformation. The result is a product where the parts made of Cork makes no environmental footprint, which of course is very positive.
I think cork is a really exciting material and since we use the original pattern of cork, each product is unique.
The choice of a simple yet distinctive stylish cylindrical shape makes it possible for cork as a material to be more in focus. The rounded edges reinforce the soft character of the cork material and create a balanced whole.
PORTO IS NOW NOMINATED FOR SWEDEN'S FOREMOST DESIGN AWARD DESIGN S - SWEDISH DESIGN AWARDS. HOW DOES IT FEEL?
Of course, it is much appreciated when something that you spend a lot of time on is noticed in this way.
During my active years as a designer and during my education, the Swedish Design Award and Svensk Form have been part of the Swedish design sphere.
